Picked for its austere composition and tonal quality, this artist proof, self-portrait was created by an art student at Fresno City College, Fresno, CA. Most likely a stone lithograph, the inked space encompasses a seated subject in a still life setting: three-quarter length table featuring a small work of art on a miniature easel lit by glowing candlelight and a framed portrait painting peering from the wall. Undoubtedly a study in order the values of light and dark, the artist has achieved a sophisticated atmosphere of thoughtful quietude. The imagery is encased under period, wavy glass in a 19th century, Eastlake wood and plaster frame accented with gilt liner. The black painted moulding is hand scored with a simple flourish of tendril vines and a worn pasteboard seals the verso. A musing arrangement that inspires appreciation for the allegorical qualities of art.

Being offered in as found condition. Please note that two photos are taken with a flash thus yielding a lighter exposure. True image tone is dark black. Ink smudges to paper border. Faint shadow of a previous matboard. Frame exhibits plaster loss in all four corners and surface paint loss. Please examine photos closely for condition.
