The USS L. Y. Spear (AS-36) was the lead ship of her class of submarine tenders from 1970 through 1996. She was named after Lawrence York Spear, a US Navy lieutenant who worked in submarine design at the Electric Boat Company during World War II.

Adam Koltz is a marine artist and 20 year veteran aboard several classes of navy ships. Adam's attention to detail stems from his intimate knowledge of ships and his passion for accuracy. His understanding of the interaction of ships with the natural forces of wind and water gives his pictures life and vitality. Adam uses pen and ink, as well as watercolor, and depicts the ship or boat on a chart with historical or current significance.
