I have zero idea on how it works. It's been in my family for generations. If you know a good antique place that cleans stuff up, it'll shine like new and, they could give you more insight on it. It's being sold as is. I don't know order the date of when it's made or how old it is or anything else about it. I would like to sell it and have it go to a collector or someone who will enjoy it for years to come!
