>>>What is a huipil?

-Huipils are made of separate panels of hand-woven fabric, joined together to form a rectangle. It is then embroidered, folded, sewn at the sides, and a space for the head is cut out.

-Most huipils are hand-woven by Mayan women in their homes, often taking months to complete.

-The huipil can usually be worn with either face to the front. Front and back are often exactly the same, or with a small difference in pattern or color.

-Huipils are often filled with important symbolism that, for generations, tell the story of the town where it was created and worn. They are proudly worn by Mayan women today throughout the Guatemalan highlands.

-These huipils have been worn by Mayan women in their daily lives for many years. Please do expect some character and imperfections.

This is a spectacular, authentic huipil from Chichicastenango, Guatemala.

Hand embroidered diamonds take different forms across this huipil. The diamond is an important symbol in Mayan tradition, representing the four cardinal points and the universe.

It is 100% cotton, woven incredibly finely. A huipil of this quality can take many months to hand weave on back strap loom. The back strap loom is a small hand loom used to make one slim weave at a time. The resulting fabrics, known as panels, are usually only 8"- 16" wide. 2-3 panels are joined together lengthways to create the base of a huipil. The fact that this garment is made using a back strap loom and is also made with a very fine weave of cotton results in the garment lasting for generations and the quality never fading. The outcome of years of experience is this truly beautiful yet sturdy masterpiece of weaving.

Huipils from Chichicastenango are known to have some of the finest and most elaborate brocading work. This piece is a spectacular example of intricate Mayan design. The brocading is done entirely by hand in a fantastic array of vibrant colors. Three panels are used to make this huipil, meaning three separate weaves and three separate panels of brocading.

From the neck, radiates an embroidered representation of the sun, shining across the huipil in all four cardinal directions to form the symbol of the cross. The cross is an important symbol in Mayan history, representing, among other things, the ceiba tree which is said to connect this world to the underworld and hold up the spirit world. The neck and sun are finished in soft, black velvet. A clasp closes at the neck allowing space for one's head to enter.

Width at shoulders: 32" (82cm)
Width at waist: 22.5" (58cm)
Length: 25" (63cm)
Neck: 8" (20cm)

This huipil is closed at the sides and ready to be worn. We are happy to make any adjustments before sending, just let us know how you like it or ask us for suggestions!

Please note: The entire piece is genuine hand woven and hand embroidered. Many huipils are now embroidered using sewing machine which can also be referred to as 'handmade'. This piece is made entirely without the use of machine. It is a genuine antique and therefore shows some signs of age and loose thread but has no holes or repairs and is in remarkably good condition considering it's age.

This huipil will be shipped from Guatemala with a tracking number. Please feel free to ask any questions.
