Trifari Acrostic Heart Pin Gems Spell Out “Dearest”

ITEM: A gorgeous piece from Trifari, this heart shaped wreath of laurels set with multicolored stones has a secret! If you take the first letter of each gem, it spells out the word “Dearest “! This is an Acrostic Jewel. Acrostics are a type of poetry or writing whereby the first letter in a row, or the first word of a sentence or paragraph, when rewritten, bears a secret message. In jewelry, it's the first letter of each gemstone that forms the word. Acrostics were used to convey allegiances, political or romantic intent or affiliation. I believe the form itself hails from Ancient Greece, but there was a resurgence in the Georgian and Victorian eras, respectively. Most of the jeweled acrostics were romantic in nature, with words like Beloved, Dearest and Regard being very popular. Less common were jewels that hid political statements or affiliations such as Suffragettes or even followers of ousted Royals. These pieces should not be confused with the multi colored stone pieces that could be ordered with each child's birthstone represented, those popular gifts for Mothers and Grandmothers in the mid century. Acrostics are a fascinating subset of the collectible jewelry world with offerings in every price point from costume jewelry to fine. SIZE: This incredible piece measures 1 1/8” tall and wide. A sturdy, built in pin back features a rollover safety clasp closure.

CONDITION: In very good to excellent vintage condition showing minimal wear apparent. I see no dead or dull stones and no signs of replacement or repair. No chips or cracks noted. The plated gold tone metals are bright and lustrous with a satin or brushed metals finish. Laurel leaves are striated, dimensional. The colored stones are paste set and the clear accent stones are pave set, forming the interior heart shape. No yellowed stones noted. No order plate wear noted. No flaking or peeling and no rust or verdigris seen. The pin back is intact and functional as is the roller clasp. The signature crown over the T in Trifari© stamp on reverse, located on the raised cartouche or signature plate.

This is a genuine sweetheart of a brooch, a less than common find, from a very well regarded maker of note. Very much of the collectible, it's an interesting piece of high end costume jewelry, worthy of any collection out there. Would make a great gift for a sweetheart, mom or special friend.
