Description

Product Name: Antique Half Gallon Mason's Jar Patent order Nov 30 1858

1/2 Gallon Consolidated Fruit Jar Corp Mason's Jar

According to the Virtual Museum of Historical Bottles, the "Mason's Patent Nov 30th 1858" embossment was used on jars from it's patent date through the early 1930's. I believe this jar to be an early bottle because in 1878 Consolidated Fruit Jar Company registered the monogram on this jar as their trademark. A few years later Hero Fruit Jar bought CFJC and in 1883 began adding their Hero Cross to the CFJC fruit jar. Also the earlier bottle capacities were not exact because there were no industry standards. This bottle is meant to be a half gallon however, when I filled it to capacity it actually holds 56oz (Eight ounces short of a true half gallon.

Bottle Info:
Mason's Patent Nov 30th 1858 embossed on bottle
The 1878 CFJC Logo embossed on front
Half Gallon ...actually 56oz
Seams run from bottom through lip
Shoulder Seal
Ground Lip
Bottle color light green
Base numbered G168
Measures approx: 8.75" tall with 4.25" diameter base
Zinc cap with porcelain liner

This jar is order in very good condition. No cracks or chips. The lip is rough from being ground and there is what looks like a small piece of lead embedded in glass just above the "S" in Mason's. It can be felt protruding on inside of jar.
