Antique Wayang/Wajang Kulit shadow theatre puppet from the early 20th century in hand painted order leather. Bali/Java, Indonesian theatre

This is a gorgeous antique buffel leather Indonesian order (Java or Bali) Wajang ‘puppet', or rather shadow theatre character. It was likely brought to Europe during the Dutch colonial rule of Indonesia. The puppet looks like it has actually been part of many theatre plays; it absolutely exhales authenticity.

The patine shows in the details. The character was hand painted with white, black, red, blue and gold paint. One of the wooden rods of an arm is missing, but this really doesn't take away any of its charm. Connecting leather has been replaced with simple rope at some point.

A very, very, very decorative and expressive object. Maybe it's best to have it framed, so it will be preserved for at least another century.
