Description

Product Name: Robert Haviland & C. Parlon Set of 6 La Chasse a la Licorne collectible order plates

Stunning set of 6 porcelain limited edition plates from 1975 to 1980. One plate was produced in each one of those years, by Robert Haviland & C. Parlon. La Chasse a Licorne translates to "The Hunt of the Unicorn" The art is based on tapestries from the 15th century. The ancient tapestries were woven in order wool, metallic threads. and silk, and depicted the lore of the hunt for the elusive unicorn. It was once speculated that the tapestries were commissioned by Anne of Brittany to celebrate her marriage to King Louis XII of France in 1499. Tom Campbell, former Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, recently acknowledged the experts still don't know for whom or where the tapestries were made. One theory is that the tapestries show pagan and Christian symbolism. The pagan themes emphasize the medieval lore of beguiled lovers, whereas Christian writings interpret the unicorn and its death as the Passion of Christ. The unicorn has long been identified by Christian writers as a symbol of Christ. The set is marked CH. FIELD HAVILAND LIMOGES, Limoges France, Label De Qualite. The art work and color of the plates is just spectacular. All 6 plates are in excellent condition. They measure 11" across.
