Moldavite takes its name from the German name of the river "Moldau" ("Vltava") in the Czech Republic, where it's been discovered for the first time.

The Moldavites are part of the Tektites family, from the Greek “tektos” which translates to “melted”. They formed around 15 million years ago when a meteorite impacted about 1.5 km in diameter in the Riès region of Germany. The parent crater is 24km in diameter.

Fractions of seconds before the collision, the heat vitrified the siliceous material in the ground (earth, sand, pebbles) creating the Moldavites which were propelled up to 450km east of the Czech Republic. The molten sand in the form of "drops" of natural glass is ejected out of the Earth's atmosphere and falls as rain over the region of Bohemia and Moravia (a few rare specimens in Germany and Austria).

In lithotherapy, Moldavite is used to facilitate meditation and telepathy. It also helps develop intuition and clairvoyance. order
