Antique Wrought Iron Roasting Fork Spike on Legs Primitive Antique order, An early wrought iron hand forged fireplace roasting single tine spike Used on the open hearth.
order An early wrought iron hand forged fireplace roasting single tine spike. Used on the open hearth of a fireplace, these handmade spike/forks would be used to roast the latest game brought home for dinner. This example is quite old and sturdy and a bit smaller than others I have sold. It has sturdy legs on both sides of the roaster to allow ease in flipping the meat while cooking on the hearth. It has a nice wrought iron twisted handle with decorative rat tail handle. The dual leg stand has nice turned-out feet on both ends. It is very minimal pitting to the iron with minimal surface rust. It looks like it has been cleaned at some point. It is in excellent condition and ready to be hung by the fireplace. I would date this piece to the early 1800's maybe earlier.
It measures: 19.75 inches long, 2.75 inches wide at the legs and 3.5 inches tall.
Reference: Double tined and double footed cooking forks can be seen in George C Neumann's, Early American Antique Country Furnishings book, pg 204. Double Footed utensils date from 1730-1800.
