This is a rice bowl with a blue dragon grasping a jewel, by Kato Hozan of Kiyomizu ware.
A rice bowl with a blue dragon depicted grasping a jewel. A five-fingered dragon. The dragon of the four gods, the ascending dragon is the highest auspicious pattern of dragons.
Although it is a very large rice bowl, it is finished with an amazing lightness.
Dragons that are formed by human hands and drawn by human hands have soul.

This is a rice bowl that makes the best use of the whiteness of porcelain, commonly known as ishimon of Kiyomizu ware.
The outside of the bowl is painted with a dragon.
The design of a dragon ascending with five claws holding a ball is a good omen.

Five-clawed dragons were especially popular in the Qing Dynasty in China.
The five-clawed dragon was a particularly popular design in China's Seika, where only emperors were allowed to use it.
In Japan, the five-clawed dragon is also used as one of the most auspicious patterns in high quality blue and white wares.

On the inside, clouds are drawn under the rim to give a perspective when viewed from the front.

Ceramics History Yoshitsugu Kato, Yoshizugu Hazan Kiln
Born in Imakumano, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto in 1953.
Graduated from Kyoto Municipal Fushimi Technical High School, Department of Ceramics in 1971.
Learned potter's wheel at Kyoto prefectural potter's training school, and polished his skills at the major course.
After that, he took over the family business, Hozangama.
He is currently active in the Kyoto Hiyoshi Pottery Cooperative.
