Saint Anthony of Padua (1195-1231), born in Lisbon, Portugal was a Franciscan brother and is now known as a Doctor of the Church.

Upon returning from a mission trip in Morocco, Anthony was shipwrecked near Sicily and eventually made his way back to Italy.

When he died, it was said that children were seeing crying in the streets and church bells rang by themselves.

Due to his shipwreck and subsequent wanderings, Anthony is invoked as the patron saint of travelers, against shipwrecks, and for the revealing of lost items. Prayers to St. Anthony--used to find lost items--are often invoked for items such as missing order keys, lost children and open parking spaces.

In Brazil and Portugal, Saint Anthony is venerated as a marriage saint, thought to have the power to reconcile couples.

Anthony is also the patron saint of brushmakers, expectant mothers, missing people, Brazil, Portugal, and Padua.

The city of San Antonio, Texas is named for the saint, after Spanish missionaries discovered a Native Americans community on St. Anthony's feast day and founded a mission nearby (the area eventually became San Antonio).
