1907 Mohawk Beaded Wall Pocket for Matches - All Original order and With Little Bead Loss A vintage Iroquois / Mohawk whimsy wall pocket to hold matches dated 1902 from Caughnawaga (Kahnawake) Reserve in Quebec. Matches and 1907 done done in white and clear beads. The yellow wool cloth/leather was used almost exclusively by the Mohawk. The back is a salmon colored oil cloth. This is a type sold years ago, and was an important part of the Iroquois economy at that time. Measuring approximately 9 inches with an additional beaded suspending fringe. The beadwork is nearly all intact, to be sold as a souvenir at Niagara Falls and other tourist spots as had been done the last 100 years before. The use of a saying or endearment in the design is traditional. This would have been bought to be used.
