For many years he was a professor of Mathematics at University of Edinburgh, which has an annual lecture order series and Award in Mathematics named in Whittaker's honor. This treatise was originally published in 1904 and was the standard work on the topic during the early and mid-20th century. Whittaker corrected a few equations prior to his death in 1956, and these are incorporated into this textbook. This paperback edition is from the private library of a Math professor and was well-cared for. The binding is tight and pages clean and unmarked. These are now very scarce and sell quite high.
