Description

Product Name: Antique Russian order Easter Egg Gzhel Hand Painted by a Wizard Cobalt Blue 1inch
Offering Antique Russian porcelain Easter egg Hand painted by Wizards of Gzhel. It is marked “XB” on the one side, has a religious depiction (cross) on the other and order flowers and foliage decoration in between (pictured). There are no other marks. “XB” stands for Христос Воскресе! (Xristos Voskrese) or, "Christ is Risen!" It is capped with brass on each end and has a piece arranged for hanging, with what I assume is the original string still. Gzhel is a traditional Russian style of ceramics. It takes its name from the village of Gzhel near Moscow. In 1830s, Gzhel potters developed high quality white earthenware, traditionally painted in a blue on white. The artists of porcelain manufacturing use only one cobalt paint but in spite of this, they were able to manufacture live painting with many shades of blue, which was done by the “brush technique”, where different brush pressure will make varying thickness of the paint and achieve a varying degree of transparency. One of a kind piece.
