They fully latch and release when pulled on the hidden lever. The buttons and the tintype are from the early to mid 1800s. The woman's dress is a great example of Civil War era clothing for the time. The scent bottle is one of the smallest I have found. It is glass with a metal gold tone cage like design. The back of the top has a hook so who ever owned it could hang it from a chatelain or necklace.
