The ancient art of Ukrainian egg decorating is called Pysanka (Pis-an-ka). A design is drawn on a raw egg with melted bees wax using a kistka (wax stylist). The egg is put in a special dye bath. When the desired color is achieved, the egg is removed and dried. Additional designs may be drawn on the egg. Bees wax protects the color during subsequent dye baths. This process is repeated until the design is finished. The design alone may take many hours. The wax is removed and the beautiful design is revealed. Several coats of polyurethane are applied to protect the color and strengthen the shell. A hole is drilled into the shell and the egg is removed. When the shell is completely dry inside, the hole is covered with bees wax or a finding for hanging. It takes several days to create a beautiful Pysanka.
