Originally a Baptist, he converted to Universalism in 1789 and preached in various New England villages order before taking up the pastorate of Boston's 2nd Universalist Church in 1817, where he edited Universalist magazines and wrote a stream of books and essays attacking Calvinism, the doctrine of eternal hell, traditional Christian theories of the Atonement, and also advocated strict separation of church and state.
