LADY'S LEG HORSE BIT - Late 1800's to Early 1900's - ANTIQUE CAST IRON with Shanks Depicting a Woman's Buns, Legs and Feet.
I'm not going to tell you that I know all about Bits and Headstalls and Saddles. Collecting over 200 bits did, however, lead me to find out which ones are rare and this Lady's Leg qualifies as such.
I'm not sure if this particular bit would be "correct" to use with today's view of sexuality. However, it was a VERY popular bit among the late 1800 and early 1900 cowboys. This one was formed in a cast so I have seen one or two just like it. However, some were cut of steel or hand formed and let's say the "buns" are quite provocative! Note that the lady's feet wrap around the oval hole for the reins.
The cast iron has the silky smooth feel that is only found in truly old cast iron. There are no broken places or cracks. The shanks (sides) are spread a little. Sometimes a bit was heated and purposely widened to fit a particular order horse. (Please make sure this is okay with you before purchasing.)
The bit is 5 1/4 inches wide at the top where the headstall would be attached. It is 6 1/2 inches wide at the base rings that were for the reins. The shanks measure 4 7/8 inches.
