BLACK MIRROR This necklace is sleek, chic, and oh so wearable. A glossy black bead the size of a ping pong ball sits at the base of the piece. From there, mixed black beads climb in descending order of size. The sides mirror one another. Standouts: 1930s black resin beads incised with crescents, black 1950s bubble beads, two heart-shaped seeds, faceted glass beads, and tubes covered with black seed beads. Tiger eye sticks glint in the light and add depth.

The piece is 41 inches long, with a gold-tone barrel clasp. It can also be worn doubled around the neck.

Designer and maker Kristianna Foye spent almost twenty years as an expat, living in Hong Kong, London, Jakarta, and Shanghai. She is now in her home city of Houston, Texas. She speaks Mandarin Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia, and is the mother of four.

Kristianna searches for old costume jewelry and interesting objects in antique markets and estate sales in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. She works with vintage charms, brooches, beads, and other materials in combination with new stones, glass, and tassels to make necklaces and earrings. She is inspired by how colors, shapes, and textures interact, and how objects from different eras and cultures amplify one other.

Every piece of Magpie Adornment jewelry is singular: Kristianna designs and constructs each one herself, and pieces are not repeated. To add further meaning and resonance, each one is named based on cultural, historical, and artistic references.

Kristianna finds that the limitations of working with older materials inspire her creativity. She also feels like there are so many beautiful things from the past that are no longer worn or enjoyed, and that it is a pleasure to use these materials to create something fresh and modern.
