Baobabs are extraordinary trees that originate in tropical Africa where they are stunning monuments in the landscape.

The fruits have a velvety skin and are grey-brown in color. The pulp is acidic and can be eaten fresh or made into drinks. When fully ripe, the dry pulp - which is high in vitamin C - is used to make a drink that is very similar in flavor to lemonade. The leaves can be cooked and eaten and also the seeds can be used in different ways. They are ground and used for baking to substitute flour. Roasted seeds are used as a substitute for coffee.

Baobabs require a location in full sun and need good drainage. Once established they are very drought tolerant. Baobas become huge - some large specimen can be found in Florida.
