A delightful and characterful crumb brush and tray. It was designed for clearing the table between courses. In France it is usual to not use side plates, so the bread is placed on the cloth, hence the need for a clearing of crumbs between courses! They are still used today in some circles.

This is a marriage, the brush does not match the tray and I do not think it is Christofle or Gallia. The tray has the most beautiful Art Nouveau design with swirling and sinuous leaves and flowers. The order brush is more Louis XVI in style, with a garland on the end of the handle and the crossed ribbon design.

Only the tray is stamped, Gallia metal, the serial number and the goat head stamp. These are rare stamps and date the tray to around 1900.

The brush especially is very worn, there are bristles missing all over and lots of tarnish and knocks. The tray is also very worn, with scrapes and marks but it is very solid and strong, as is the handle. I have tested the set and the brush still works to clear the table, if not as efficiently as when it was first made..

This ensemble is very much for lovers of the worn look, the Gallia tray still has a lot of antique charm, despite its wear.
