This listing is for a strikingly beautiful natsume tea caddy made around 20 years ago by lacquer artist Nakamura Kosai. It is made of wood and decorated with vivid momiji leaves over a black lacquered base. The leaves have a slight texture and are really quite beautiful, their detail is perfect. This piece is a real gem - it's almost too good to use. It comes with its original signed wooden storage box. *SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS LISTING FOR SHIPPING SUSPENSIONS AND/OR AVAILABLE OPTIONS.

Nakamura Kosai (b.1955) is a makie lacquer artisan born and raised in the Yamanaka production area in Ishikawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Ishikawa Prefectural Komatsu Technical High School in 1974, he studied under master craftsman Masanori Omote. In 1979 he became independent and established his own workshop. Nakamura studied advanced maki-e techniques under Omote, but has made a name for himself by combining colour with makie on black lacquer. He has his own unique style and his work is very popular for tea practice. These days collectors are pushing up the price of his work, and used pieces are not easy to come by. He mainly produces tea utensils such as natsume, tea scoops, as well as trays and jubako. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Koedo and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Yamanaka nuri refers to lacquerware produced in Ishikawa Prefecture. Echizen craftsmen from Fukui began producing lacquer pieces in this area as far back as the late 1500s. In the 1700s focus shifted towards producing wares for visitors to Yamanaka onsen. This also helped to promote the hot springs, so demand for lacquerware also increased. New techniques for lacquering were developed in the 1800s, and the arrival of the makie technique from Aizu, Kyoto and Kanazawa brought new changes to production in the area. Local craftsmen were also introduced to using a hand turned wood lathe to decorate the surface of their wares. Various patterns were developed and this became the most distinctive characteristic of Yamanaka lacquerware. The area flourished and it became known for its tea ceremony utensils and other fine lacquerware. Today there are over thirty lacquerware studios in the area, including Living National Treasure Kawakita Ryozo. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Koedo and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
